I'm a newbie here, and an old 'half-fast' tenor player. No longer able to play because of illness, but still a loyal Herbie fan!
I have a tenor mouthpiece apparently like the one pictured by hgiles, above. It's a Selmer Paris Jazz Metal Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece Model C., and it's only collecting dust. It's in excellent, to like-new condition, and I'd like to sell it. My mthpc is exactly like the one pictured, BUT only has one star on the back of the barrel, under the ligature.(c.).
This is not a different mthpc, as it appears to be identical to the ones online, but possibly an earlier version? I bought mine in the 70's.Thanks in advance for any info!
Please feel free to call if you'd like, at 417-693-1333. Best to all, Paul in Missouri. Hgiles - Before you spend money on a refacer, what about trying stiffer cuts of the reed you are using now?Playing a much smaller tip opening than you are used to is pretty different, but I've found that it can be pretty instructive too. Specifically, I recently picked up a Buescher Tru-Lay tenor piece from the 1930's which has a.060' tip opening. For reference, my usual set up is either a Morgan 6C with a 3 strength reed or a 10MFan Merlot 7 with a 2.5 strength reed.
With the Buescher (and a 3 Vandoren or 3.5 Rico), I find that unless I use really good breath support and avoid biting down at all costs, the whole thing shuts down.Dr. Wyman has just just applied his standard reface to this mouthpiece and it is on its way back to me now.
I believe he opens these a few thousandths, but no more so it will end up in the same ball park. I'll probably try Vandoren 3.5 or 4s on it next. Ellery Eskelin (EE NYC) has written pretty extrensively on doing the same thing with an old Buescher mouthpiece. Doing this can be eye-opening.
